What is SPARK Health
SPARK Health is a student-run organization at the University of Toronto that publishes a peer-reviewed undergraduate research journal focused on health sciences. Our mission is to empower students in writing, editing, publishing, and presenting their research, promote open science communication, and foster collaboration among peers, professors, and alumni.
When does SPARK Health publish its volumes?
Our first volume is published in Nov 2025. We publish annually, and the next issue is anticipated to be published in May 2026.
What types of articles does SPARK Health publish?
We publish two main types of articles:
- Published Abstract
- Primary Research: Original research conducted by undergraduate students that meets university-level standards.
- Review Articles: Synthesis and analysis of existing knowledge and research in health sciences, such as literature reviews, meta-analyses, and systematic reviews.
Who can join SPARK Health
Any registered students at the University of Toronto. Non-voting membership is available to University of Toronto staff, faculty, alumni, and individuals from outside the University.
How is SPARK Health funded?
SPARK Health is funded through university resources, grants, and sponsorships. We do not charge membership fees or engage in commercial activities for profit.

What is the Executive team, and how is it structured?
The Executive Team consists of 5 voting members and 4 non-voting members who oversee the operations of SPARK Health. Currently we have:
- 2 Editor-in-Chiefs
- 1 Deputy Editor
- 1 Secretary
- 1 Treasurer
- 1 Promotions Director
- 2 Events Directors
- 1 Design Director.

How can I submit my research to the SPARK Health Journal?
Research submissions are made through our article submission portal on the SPARK Health journal website. Ensure your work meets the guidelines for either primary research or review articles before submitting.

What kind of events does SPARK Health organize?
SPARK Health hosts a range of events aimed at building community and enhancing research skills. Our events include social gatherings, academic seminars, and networking opportunities.
Some events include:
- ROP Meet the Profs Info Session: Connect students with professors to explore research opportunities, better understand ROPs, and gain insight into how to build a strong application.
- Undergraduate Research Panel: Upper-year students sharing their tips on finding research opportunities and research journeys
- Research Trivia Night: This event will introduce you to key research concepts, valuable research opportunities, and much more through fun games.
How can I get involved in SPARK Health if I am not on the executive team?
Even if you’re not on the Executive Team, there are many ways to get involved with SPARK Health, such as contributing articles, participating in events, and engaging in discussions about health science topics. You can also join various committees or participate in editorial work if positions are available.
